An epiphyte is a plant that grows upon another plant or object, non-parasitically, and derives its moisture and nutrients from the air and rain and sometimes from debris accumulating around it. They are found in the temperate zone (as many mosses, liverworts, lichens and algae) and in the tropics (as many ferns, cacti, orchids, and bromeliads).

In this intance Epiphyte is a metal tree with branches that spiral upwards, each holding their own individual pot and plant.

A library that recalls a ‘contemporary forest’, expressing concepts of naturalness and sustainability.

The variety of woods selected for the bookshelf exhibit the broad range of finishes available from Vinterio as well as recalling the diversity of such a natural material. The structure and composition of the woods was intentional in evoking a tree’s natural lifecycle; with darker shades at the base of the library, shifting towards lighter ‘new growth’ at the top.
Further analogy between bookshelf and tree is evident in the multi-layered and faceted design; in much the same way a plant’s vessels draw water from the soil, the shelves develop a progression from floor to ceiling carrying books and information.

In collaboration with Luca Fois and Vinterio for the event Surfacin’ during Zona Tortona 2009.
